Every Ludhianvi is unsafe on roads, during the day the chaotic traffic takes its toll.
And during the early hours in the morning and late evening walks, people have to bear the attack by a huge population of stray dogs. Most of the people who go for a walk or cycling even in the gated atmosphere of Punjab Agricultural University have to face a challenging task when these feeble looking dogs bark aloud and attack the passerby with their sharp teeth.
Last week, in one similar incident, an elderly gentleman was attacked by more than a dozen hungry dogs near the gate number 3, when I reached there he was already bleeding, his clothes were torn and there were sharp marks of dog biting on his body. We rushed him to the nearest hospital where he went for extensive treatment. This man was crying and cursing the government or authorities who are responsible for the safety of the people.
Every street and corner has huge dumps for filth and food waste, these stray animals feed on them. There is epidemic proportion of garbage lying everywhere.
Can we make Ludhiana free from these stray animals?
The adjoining Veterinary University is also a breeding ground for these animals, and the stray animal are never vaccinated. Anyone who is a victim of their attack never complains, and hence 'the chalta hai' attitude continues. We, as Indians are very tolerant, resilient and peace loving, till someone breaks us into pieces.
I am not a doctor of animals who can suggest a remedy to cure the menace of stray dogs, but someone needs to come out with a practical solution for this problem, may be a shelter for stray dogs, where people can go and feed them, show that they care for them or simply adopt them, take them home, vaccinate them and give them a decent life to live.
Do remember, dogs are the best friends of men, more loyal than any other animal, leave aside the human race.
