Chandigarh, January 30, 2019: The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh observed Martyrs’ Day, here today by organizing a special lecture on the ‘Gandhi, Dialogue and Peace’ by Dr.Ronki Ram, Professor, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Department of Political Science, PU. He said Peace is much more positive. When one comes out of the conflicting situation with the help of dialogue one will find himself totally transformed and a changed person. He said we must inculcate the principles given by Mahatma Gandhi in our day to day lie. He further added that “One has to live consciously and to live his/her life as the Kingdom of Truth”. The programme begin with two minutes silence to pay respect to the martyrs. Dr. Seema Malhotra introduced all the dignitaries to the audience and also informed everybody about the works and achievements of the Department. Professor Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instructions and officiating Vice Chancellor, PU, in his keynote address, highlighted the importance of the day by explaining the history of the martyrs and their contribution to the Indian freedom struggle. He explained and advised everybody to follow the ideologies of Gandhi in the true essence. An On-The-Spot Essay Competition was organised on the view of Martyrdom day on 22nd January 2019 for the students of Panjab University and Colleges of Chandigarh. Three prizes of the cash money amounting Rs 1000/- Ist prize to Mansi Sharma, M. A 2 nd Year, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Rs. 700/- 2nd Prize to Nancy, M. A 1st, Deptt of Defence National and Security Studies and Rs 500 /- for the IIIrd prize Ankit Singh Bhayan, M. phil 2nd Year, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies respectively were distributed to the winners. On 28th January 2019, Dr. Kuldeep Singh, co-ordinator and his NCC Team participated in the cleanliness drive at the Gandhi Bhawan as a part of the function of the Martyrdom Day. An exhibition and demonstration of the Postal Stamps of India as a tribute to the Father of the Nation was exhibited by Mr. Rakesh Walia. The faculty members, research scholars, students and members of the staff of the Gandhian and Peace Studies Department as well as faculty members, staff and students from other Departments of the University attended the Commemoration of Martyrs’ Day. The Chairperson of the Department, Dr. Ashu Pasricha extended a warm thanks to all the participants, and all those who attended the function.
