Chandigarh, October 11, 2019: The Department of Defence and National Security Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh has received a special grant of Rupees 2 crore for the up gradation of the department over a period of 5 years from University Grants Commission
The proposal approved by the U.G.C. includes the funding for library (Books, Journals and E-content); equipment; publications; travel; hiring/contingency etc. among others. A provision for appointing Adjunct Faculty for short periods has also been made in order to enhance the research output of the department. Additionally, the department can appoint research associates/assistants for a stipulated period to conduct research on various relevant issues related to both Internal as well as External Security of India. Under this project, the department will also utilise this grant for conducting various International and National seminars/conferences as well as workshops. This special grant will help and support the academic and research endeavours of the department while also contributing towards enhancing National Security awareness in the country.
The department been adjudged as one of the best departments of the subject in the country for its academic achievements by the Expert Committee constituted by the Ministry for Human Resources Development/ University Grants Commission. Despite being one of the youngest departments of the subject, it has been one of the most visible departments in terms of organising various academic events on pertinent issues on a regular basis. The department has been running a variety of academic courses including a two-year Master’s Programme in Defence and Strategic Studies as well as two one-year Diploma Programmes in Homeland Security and Disaster Management apart from MPhil and PhD programmes. It has a good number of serving Armed Forces Officers (on study leave) enrolled in these courses. The department also has strong linkages with the armed forces and is running two special M.Phil programmes for the Armed Forces Officers in collaboration with the Army War College, Mhow and Army Training Command (ARTRAC), Shimla.
