Addressing the rally Com D P Maur, General Secretary, Joint Council of Trade Unions Ludhiana said that some unscrupulous elements under the patronage of some political people have been harassing these poor vendors and demanding (Hafta) from them. He demanded immediate arrest of the responsible police personnel and enquiry in to the background of this unprovoked act by the police.

Ludhiana, October 10, 2014: The Communist Party of India (CPI) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) held a rally outside Raghunath Enclave Police Chowki, Barewal today to protest against the alleged beating, manhandling, abusing and damaging the property of the poor vendors (Rehri and Phari walas), men and women, who have been working near Barewal village for long. On October 4 the police of Raghunath Chowki came there and allegedly started hurling abuses at them and then beat the women and men of these vendors without any reason. They broke their Rehris and destroyed the goods. The poor people were not only humiliated but also suffered financial loss. The police did not have any order from the municipal corporation against these people.

Com Gurnam Singh Sidhu, Assistant Secretary, CPI City Ludhiana said that when the aggrieved persons approached the in-charge of the chowki and also the SHO of the area, no action has been taken against the police personnel responsible. He said that the issues will be taken up human right and police commissioner. Since the women were beaten and abused by the male police the issue will be taken up with the women commission too.   
Com Kameshwar, Ladooshah, Arjun, Ramchander Yadav and K N Gupta – General Secretary Rehri Phari Federation also addressed.
