Ludhiana, February 13, 2014: The Community Medicine Department of Christian Medical College Ludhiana hosted a Continued Medical Education (CME) cum  State Task Force ( STF) Meeting of Medical Colleges involved Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme on Thursday.  

Dr Subash Batta, Civil Surgeon Ludhiana was the Chief Guest and he challenged everyone that the fight against TB is a combined effort and requires medical colleges to continue to fight against this disease that affects a large population of Indian’s.  Dr Abraham G. Thomas, Director CMC Ludhiana, reminded the audience how much we have advanced regarding this battle against tuberculosis.  He emphasised that tuberculosis can affect every Indian alike, the rich, the poor, the office goer and the hospital workers, house wife, children etc are all at risk and we should continue our efforts not just to control but to eradicate it like small pox.

Dr Balbir Singh, State Tuberculosis Officer cum Secretary of the STF stressed on organisational efficiency and improved work.

Dr Jai Kishen as the Officiating Chairman of the STF invited everyone for the STF and reminded us about the success in the tuberculosis treatment so far.

Apart from Faculty and Resident Doctors from CMC the audience included Doctors from nine Medical colleges, District Tuberculosis officers (DTO’s), STF representatives and Central TB Division representative- Dr Mohan P S Kholi.

Dr (Maj) Priyanka Aggarwal, WHO Consultant, RNTCP, Punjab and Chandigarh up-dated the medical colleges and the DTO’s on the very important revisions in the guidelines for treating tuberculosis in children. Dr Ashish Chawla, DTO updated the audience on the revisions in Tuberculosis case definitions and the modalities of treatment for Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) Tuberculosis. There were research presentations by Dr Rosy Aggarwal and Dr Nagaraj from GMC Amristar looking at TB defaulter characteristics and outcome of treatment respectively. Over 90 delegates registered for the conference.

Dr Shavinder Singh, Professor and Head of Community Medicine was the chief organiser for the CME cum SFT meeting.
