Purdue Varsity Delegation Interacts With PAU Experts

Ludhiana, December 9, 2015: A six-member delegation from Purdue University, USA visited Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) to discuss joint research activities between both the institutions. The delegation also deliberated on the establishment of “PAU-Purdue University Joint Research Centre” on the PAU campus. It may be mentioned that PAU and College of Agriculture, Purdue University, USA had inked a pact in August 2014 to develop strong academic and research interactions. The delegation met Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, and senior officials, faculty and students of PAU.
 
Dr Balwinder Singh, Director of Research, PAU said the development of climate resilient crops is one of priority areas of the Joint Research Centre. This strategic partnership also aims at promoting mutually beneficial research collaborations across faculty members at two universities, he added.
 
Dr D.S. Brar, Adjunct Professor, School of Agricultural Biotechnology, PAU said, "Good results are expected from this bilateral cooperation"
 
During the three-day programme, PAU experts apprised the visiting members of PAU’s wheat breeding programme, marker assisted breeding in wheat and rice, wheat genomics, rice breeding, maize breeding, marker assisted breeding for abiotic stress resistance, and oilseed breeding and genomics. The experts namely Dr Navtej Bains, Dr Parveen Chhuneja, Dr Kuldeep Singh, Dr G.S. Mangat, Dr J.S. Chawla, Dr Yogesh Vikal and Dr S.S. Banga delivered power point presentations.
 
Dr K.G. Raghothama, Associate Director, International Programmes in Agriculture, Purdue University, USA said, “We have come here to discuss about the task ahead of us. We want to make PAU-Purdue University Joint Research Centre functional and historic.”
 
The team of Purdue scientists also comprised Dr G.S. Johal, Professor, Botany and Plant Pathology; Dr Mitch Tuinstra, Professor of Agronomy and three Ph.D students namely Dr Megan Fenton, Dr Brad Thada and Dr R.S. Khangura. The members gave presentations on emerging concepts in plant immunity and their implications in resistance breeding, breeding in the omics era, and evolution of genetics markers and their role in narrowing the divide between mendelian and quantitative genetics. Besides, students of Purdue University and PAU jointly conducted a workshop on “QTL Mapping and Association Mapping.”
