Chandigarh, September 24, 2015: The village health committees have performed significant role in providing health education in rural areas of State. The health department has imparted training to committee members on regular basis briefing them about the responsibilities, duties, functions of committee to successfully generate ambitious communication platform to diversify quality health services in rural areas within time.
Disclosing this here today an official spokesman of the government said that the Punjab Government has set up 13104 VHSNC’s (Village Health Sanitation Nutrition Committee) to provide health education in rural areas of Punjab. These committees have been conducting meetings every month to built direct channel of communication between health department and general public.
Talking about role of ASHA worker (Accredited Social Health Activist)   in the committee,   he said that ASHA is first government appointee of health department at village level and also secretary of committee and is responsible for managing venue, agenda and health issues. ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) is managerial member of committee keeping all the record of the villagers especially the expectant mothers. They also have complete technical and professional details of all health services given by health department.
Adding further, he said that keeping in view the healthy lifestyle,  information, education  and precaution taken in severe cases and diseases like  female foeticide, women empowerment, institutional delivery, immunization of children,  sanitation, keeping clean surrounding, cancer, diabetes , tuberculosis , laparoscopy, HIV ,iodine deficiency, hypertension, obesity,  have been discussed in these meetings of the villagers with the health officials.    
Sharing his experiences about the Village Health Committees, Senior Medical Officer Dr. Tekraj Bhatia when he was posted at Primary Health Centre Hoshiarpur said that it was difficult to convince people about the functioning of these committees.  People were against these practices because of lack of knowledge and inadequate representation from the Health Department before the formation of these committees. Now with the extensive awareness drive launched by the government, the rural people are convinced and expressed faith in the programmes and policies of the government vis-a-vis health services, said Dr. Bhatia.
