PMC seeks declaration from medical colleges over statutory curriculum

Ludhiana, April 20, 2015: Punjab Medical Council has sought declaration under oath from all the medical colleges and university in the state that they were imparting medical education as per the “Statutory Curriculum” in the extant course; MBBS and/or MD and/or MS and/or DM and/or MCh degree. 

The PMC has in this regard written to the Vice Chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences and the principals of the Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Amritsar, Gian Sagar Medical College & Hospital, Banur, Patiala, Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Jalandhar and Chintpurni Medical College & Hospital, Pathankot.

Every medical college is statutorily required to implement the curriculum as notified in the Statutory Regulations of the University to which the medical college is affiliated and for recognition by Medical Council in each medical discipline - MBBS and/or MD and/or MS and/or DM and/or Mch degree imparted in the said medical college.

Dr G S Grewal President disclosed that the PMC will undertake surprise inspections in this matter. Any violation(s) in Statutory Regulations compromise the very integrity and basic requirements for maintaining the standard of medical education in state of Punjab. 

The PMC president said, if the said body or authorities refuse to comply with any such request, the State Government may upon report by the Council remove such University, college or school from the schedule or refuse to include it in the schedule.

Quoting the Punjab Medical Council Act, Grewal said, it inter alia says under, Section 21 that “the Council shall have power to request the governing body or authorities of any University, medical college or school, included in or desirous of being included in the schedule – 

(a) To furnish such reports, returns or other information as the Council may require to enable to judge of the efficiency of the instruction given therein, in medicine and surgery and midwifery; and

 (b) To provide facilities to enable any member of the Council deputed by the Council in this behalf to be present at the examination held by such University, college or school.
