Ludhiana, March 19, 2015: With the theme “Adopt Crop Diversification, Save Natural Resources,” the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is decked up to hold its two-day on-campus Kisan Mela. On March 20, Jathedar Sardar Tota Singh, Minister of Agriculture and NRI Affairs, Punjab will be the chief guest. Dr G.S. Kalkat, Chairman, Punjab State Farmers’ Commission and Suresh Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Development), Punjab will be the guests of honour. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU will preside over the mela. On March 21, Dr A.K. Singh, Deputy Director General (Agriculture Extension), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, will be chief guest at prize distribution function.
Dr R.S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education said Kisan Mela aims at ensuring maximum contact with the farmers, disseminating them latest farm information and recent technologies, and gathering feedback from them for designing future research strategies. He further said the farmers and the farm women will be acquainted with the allied agricultural enterprises such as beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, protected cultivation, natural dyes, preparation of utility articles out of waste, rainwater harvesting at household level, and appropriate sources of light for home. Dr Sidhu said the seeds of improved cultivars and PAU farm literature will be displayed and sold to the farmers during the mela.
Dr Chander Mohan, Additional Director Communication, said that the stalls of PAU farm publications will be set-up at four different spots in the University including that at agro-industrial exhibition ground; near old building of Centre for Communication and International Linkages (CCIL); near new building of CCIL which is next to Farmers’ Service Centre; and at farm of Director (Seeds).
