Ludhiana, December 2, 2015: The Inter-College Youth Festival for the session 2015-16 was formally inaugurated at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today amidst gaiety and gusto. Mr Rajat Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana was the chief guest while Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU presided over the function.

On the occasion, a cultural procession was taken out by the students of the four constituent colleges of PAU including College of Agriculture, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, College of Home Science and the Institute of Agriculture, Gurdaspur. The procession provided a peep into plethora of issues such as growing number of fraudsters; rising intolerance, communalism, casteism; gender inequality; flaunting riches; drug abuse and farmers' indebtedness. The students, through their spellbound performance, promoted secularism, communal harmony, simplicity in life, upholding the cultural heritage, and adopting agriculture as a profession. The music items and creative dances were also held today.

In his inaugural remarks, Mr Aggarwal urged the youth to beware of four Ds - drugs, dowry, dirt, and driving without license. He advised them to shun all the four Ds, which are crippling the society and become responsible citizens. Comparing ancient-modern education system, he said, “The students, in the present era, are fortunate enough to have the best of education and social media as a powerful tool of expression.” Youth is the age of transformation, he said, while calling upon the students to be mature, take decisions wisely, be family oriented, and keep the spark inside them alive. He highly praised the performance of the students in the cultural procession and the profound topics, chosen by them.

In his presidential address, Dr Dhillon said there is a lot to learn from these youth fests. “Participation in cultural and sports activities is essential for a balanced personality,” he said, while remarking that hard work and enjoyment must go hand-in-hand. He also lauded the performance of the students in the cultural procession. Later, he released “PAU Magazine,” brought out by the Department of Agricultural Journalism, Languages and Culture.

Earlier, Dr R.K. Dhaliwal, Director Students’ Welfare, welcomed the chief guest, dignitaries, and the students and faculty of PAU. She said, “Co-curricular activities are the integral part of the education system.” The youth festival provides many opportunities to the budding artistes to display their talent, infuse self-confidence and keep the rich culture alive, she added.
