Irrigation Department To Spend Rs 22 Lakh For Cleaning & Beautification Of Sidhwan Canal

Ludhiana, April 26, 2015: For promoting Sidhwan Canal passing through the city as a tourist destination, Punjab Irrigation Department would be spending an amount of Rs 22 Lakh. Under this project, the Sidhwan Canal would be both beautified and cleaned by the department. Punjab Irrigation Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon today inaugurated this project.
After taking stock of the entire Sidhwan Canal, he directed the officials that he would personally monitor the progress regularly. He also directed Punjab Agricultural University';s landscaping expert Dr Navtej Singh that within next 10 days, he should prepare a blueprint regarding the way in which the Sidhwan Canal would be beautified and properly landscaped. He said that he would also speak to PAU Vice Chancellor and would ask him to assist the Punjab government for this project.
While speaking on the occasion, Sharanjit Singh Dhillon told the government officials and NGO representatives that he would take progress report of this project in next 10 days.
While speaking to media persons on the occasion, Dhillon said that for this project, they would take help of NGO';s as well as other social organisations. He also warned the litterbugs of not polluting the Sidhwan Canal by dumping solid waste into it. He said that if any oerson is caught polluting it, a fine of Rs 50,000 would be imposed on him along with six months jail. He said that the Punjab government wants to develop this canal as a tourist destination and all city residents should be stake holders for it. 
He informed that the Irrigation Department has already designated an officer and the concerned officer';s phone number and email have been displayed near the canal. He said that if any person has any complaint regarding it, he or she can contact that particular officer.
He urged the city residents to click photos of litterbugs and their vehicle numbers and send them to the Irrigation Department either through an email or personally. He said that once the culprit is identified, the district administration would lodge an FIR against the litterbugs on the basis of the photographic evidence.
Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said that problematic stretches along the canal have been identified and various teams have been formed which would patrol the area and catch the litterbugs. He informed that they would very soon put up mesh along the bridges on the canal and iron sheets along areas where the Sidhwan Canal gets polluted the most. He said that the industrialists, social organisations and NGO';s should come forward for this noble cause.
