DMCH observes International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking

DMCH, Ludhiana on Thursday observes International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking.

Ludhiana, June 26, 2014: DMCH today observed International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking by organising health awareness lecture and also elaborating on different abuses of drug use. According to Dr Ranjive Mahajan, Professor & Head of Psychiatry, the day is celebrated as an expression to strengthen action & co-operation to achieve the goal of an international society, free of drug abuse.
Drug abuse continues to constitute a serious threat to public health, safety of humanity particularly in younger people. Looking at the extent of drug addiction in Punjab, being a border state has become a major transit & destination point in drug trafficking. Even the inmates in jails across the state are hooked to drug. According to Secretary of DMCH Managing Society- Sh Prem Kumar Gupta, Department of Psychiatry at DMC&H has all facilities for de-addiction of drugs like opium and its derivatives including tobacoo, cannabis and alcohol etc. DMCH also has indoor and outdoor level care with focus on relapse prevention, psychotherapy/ counselling.
De-addiction camps are organized at regular intervals with an objective to spread awareness & mobilize the community & its resources towards prevention of alcoholism & substance abuse. Other areas of focus are:
?         Preventive education & awareness generation
?         Identification of addicts
?         Motivational counselling
?         Detoxification & de-addiction
?         After care & re-integration into social mainstream
