280 tubewells costing Rs. 130 crore set to irrigate Kandi areas by March 15

Chandigarh, June 22, 2014:    The installation process of 280 tube wells in Kandi Areas by Punjab government has been put on fast track and this ambitious project entailing financial outlay of Rs.130.06 crore is all set to change the economic profile of backward Kandi area by March 2015. The completion of this project would rejuvenate the whole irrigation network of this backward area by providing better irrigation facilities to the farmers. 

Disclosing this here today, Irrigation Minister, Punjab Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said that the Punjab Government have already issued approvals for 45 tube well connections whereas 183 tube wells have been drilled and 171 tube wells have been repaired till 31st May, 2014. He said that the Punjab Water Resources Management and Development Corporation is providing enhanced irrigation facilities in various parts of the state.

Dhillon revealed that corporation was already in process  of expediting the process of more than 1500 tube wells out of which 650 were installed in kandi areas and 850 were in non-kandi area. He added that tubewells were irrigating 1.90 lakh acres of land Rs. 1 per unit cost in the Kandi area and Rs. 1.60 in terms of electricity consumption.

Dhillon further added that state government is committed to provide adequate irrigation facility to the farmers of the state and emphasized on the proper implementation of policies and schemes of the government.
