DMCH in association with The Arjan Veer Foundation observes World Marrow Donors Day
Ludhiana, September 21, 2019: In a series of health awareness lectures being regularly conducted in the institute, DMCH in association with The Arjan Veer Foundation today observed World Marrow Donors Day by conducting an awareness session and donor registration camp today in LT-1 of Dumra Auditorium. World Marrow Donors Day is celebrated globally on the third Saturday in the month of September with the purpose to raise awareness among the general public and decision-makers about being a stem cell donor . It is celebrate in more than 50 countries. Dr Shruti Kakkar Paediatric Haematologist oncologist DMCH shared her own journey being a stem cell donor. She further said that how she registered herself as a stem cell donor two years back and she got matched with five year girl named Vanshinka from Mumbai who was thalassemic child. She shared her experiences with audience that Vanshika is now her own daughter as she is having her DNA. Dr Kakkar further said that stem cell donation is a safe procedure, everyone should come forward, register and donate. Anyone between 18-50 years of age can get registered as a voluntary stem cell donor. Dr Suvir Singh Consultant Haematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant specialist addressed that in India only 8% to 10% patients got their matched donor due to the very less number of donors in India. For patients in India, it is beneficial that the donors should be of Indian origin as marrow of donors from other countries does not match the patients living here, due to the variations in our respective body systems. So,it is strongly advisable that we all should come forward for this noble cause to save the precious life of victims. Jasleen Gracha, CEO of The Arjan Veer Foundation highlighted that how stem cell works for human body and how person can registered themselves for this donation. She also said that stem cell donation is very easy process. In his message Secretary Prem Kumar Gupta Said that DMCH has always been active in promoting preventive measures among the people to build a healthy and disease-free society.
