Deficiencies came to light during surprise checking of jails in Ludhiana

Ludhiana, July 31, 2019: On the orders of Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Agrawal, Additional Deputy Commissioner Khanna Jaspal Singh Gill conducted a surprise checking of the local central jail and the Borstal Jail.

Gill promised that the deficiencies came to light during checking would be brought to the notice of top officials to get these resolved.

Giving information on this, Gill said that during the visit he noticed that the arrangement of canteen running inside the jail was very poor and he immediately directed the jail superintendent to improve the quality soon. In Borstal Jail a large number of inmates were yet to undergo viral tests, which are very important. Senior officials of the health department were instructed to do the needful in this regard.

He said that the problem of chopped sewerage in these jails have been going on for a long time. Kripa Shankar Saroj, Principal Secretary, Jail, had also taken notice of the matter a few days back. He said that when the prisoners had to be taken outside the jail to the hospital, the jail lacked adequate number of staff. In addition, the jail also has a shortage of essential drugs and other necessary equipment.

Gill said he had directed the jail authorities to plant saplings in the premises so that the environment could be purified and greened. Jail inmates were also instructed to assist in planting vegetables etc. in jail so that they could be encouraged towards kitchen gardening. Jail Superintendent Rajiv Arora and other jail officials were also present on the occasion.
