Death of workers a result of negligence by the labour department and municipal corporation: AITUC
Ludhiana, October 11, 2018: Expressing deep anguish at the death of four workers while working in the factory at night which was locked from outside, the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has demanded compensation to the families and strict action against the factory owners, the concerned labour officers and municipal staff. In a statement Com D P Maur – Vice President AITUC Punjab, Vijay Kumar, O.P.Mehta and Kewal Singh Banwait and M S Bhatia have said that such incidents are occurring repeatedly because of complete alleged negligence and connivance on the part of labour department and municipal corporation officers. The labour department is to look into the welfare of the workers but they hardly do the job. Many of factory owners look upon the workers as animals otherwise why should the workers be locked. Neither they enter their name in the register nor they give ESI and EPF benefits. The labour department even raises unnecessary hurdles in issuing labour welfare cards. The municipal corporation overlooks the required safety norms. The AITUC, the leaders said, will soon launch an agitation for this.
