Ludhiana, May 29, 2019: Aykai Hospital, Ludhiana has become first in the region to perform kidney transplant with non matching blood group kidney donor. Transplant surgeons, nephrologist, pathologist, physiotherapist, nursing and paramedical Staff worked for over a month to achieve success in this rare medical feat which is going to increase the number of kidney transplantations from living donors by up to 30% when patients are transplanted across the ABO antibody barrier . This will help huge population suffering from kidney failure.

Patient Raman kumar from Rayya with blood group O was on dialysis for about 18 months and needed kidney transplant. He had no suitable blood group matching family donor. His father with blood group B was willing to donate but in such a case antibody against B group in Patient‘s blood will destroy father’s kidney. Team led by renowned urologist and Transplant surgeon Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh & Nephrologist Dr J S Sandhu decided to do transplant with kidney of different blood group from father by changing patient’s blood group with the help of special drugs and by removing damaging antibodies from patient’s blood by special procedure of plasmapheresis. This whole preoperative preparation took about a month. Patient underwent kidney transplant successfully once antibody titre came down and was acceptable. His kidney worked very well and both father & son discharged from the hospital.

In an other case patient from Amritsar had no matching donor in the family. His father in law’s kidney with different blood group was transplanted by treating patient, removing antibody so that patient accepted that kidney as its own blood group. Operation was great and whole staff & family was excited.

Dr Navpreet Kaur, Director Aykai hospital while congratulating the team told that we are committed to provide highest quality care for patients needing transplant and such rare efforts will help community from Punjab, Haryana, HP and J& K at large.
