Amritsar, December 17, 2015: A "Three-Week Refresher Course in Disaster Management (ID)" concluded at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre of Guru Nanak Dev University. As many as 38 university and college teachers of various disciplines from across the length and breadth of the country participated.
Prof. Satya Prakash, Deptt. of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Prof. Satya Prakash in his valedictory address talked about the benefit of these courses for the teachers for their professional, academic upliftment. Expressing his anguish over the emerging teacher-taught relationship in the present era, he asked the teaching community to emulate the duties of teachers enshrined in our ancient holy books. The duty of a teacher is confined not ony to impart bookish knowledge to their students, but also to inculcate moral human values like compassion, goodness, tolerance, universal brotherhood etc., he emphasized. The need of the hour is to realize the onus on our shoulders and to rededicate ourselves to the noble cause of education in order to bring about a positive change in the society, he concluded.
Prof. (Mrs.) Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre in her welcome address felicitated the participants on the successful completion of the course In the disaster prone world of our times, it is of utmost importance for one and all to be both physically and mentally prepared to tackle the aftermath of any disaster. Undoubtedly, the teachers can play an effective role in disseminating this message, she stressed.
Dr. M.S. Bhatti, Deptt. of Botanical & Environmental Sciences and the Course Coordinator enumerated the various activities undertaken during the course. apart from the theoretical aspects. The participants of the course highly lauded this endeavour of HRDC and suggested to make such courses mandatory for the teaching community at large of shorter duration. They felt themselves better prepared to tackle the aftermath of a disaster. Earlier Prof. Satya Prakash was extended a floral welcome by Prof. (Mrs.) Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Dr. Mohan Kumar and Dr. M.S. Bhatti. In the end, certificates were given away to the successful participants by the Chief Guest. Dr. Mohan Kumar proposed the vote of thanks./ (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
