Special schools doing wonders to rehabilitate rescued child labour in Punjab

Chandigarh, February 2, 2015: The novel experiment of Punjab Labour department to provide vocational education to rescued child labour in 127 special schools in three districts is proving a great success. The union government has appreciated the Punjab’s experiment and replicating the same in other states suffering from the menace of child labour.

Disclosing this, an official spokesperson informed that this special school is one of various measures taken by the Punjab Government to tackle the menace of child labour effectively and ensuring proper rehabilitation of rescued children. He said that  a state level monitoring committee has been constituted to keep a hawk’s eye to ensure the implementation of National Child Labour Project in the state.

The spokesperson further elaborated that special schools are being run in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar under the National Child Labour Project so that they are properly rehabilitated in the society. According to the spokesperson, 40 schools are being run in Amritsar, 40 in Ludhiana and 27 in Jalandhar. In each of the special schools 50 students are admitted in the age group of 9-14 years.

Divulging more information, the spokesperson said that the students enrolled in these schools are also provided with the facility of mid-day meals by the Sarv Sikhya Abhiyan authority which also provides them with the books. Special emphasis is laid on equipping the students the students with latest technical and vocational skills as per the requirements of the present hi-tech age so that after passing out they can compete with other sections of the society.

He said that every child gets a monthly stipend of Rs. 150. The students are also provided with the uniforms. Each school has 2 teaching volunteers, 1 vocational education teacher, 1 clerk and 1 clerk. Regular medical check-up camps are also conducted at regular intervals in these schools.

He informed that the Labour Department has taken many initiatives to put a stop to this problem and as a result conviction rate of erring employers has been on the high.

The spokesperson also conveyed that the help of media is also taken to make people aware about menace of child labour.
