Chandigarh, August 21, 2015: The Education Department, Punjab, has issued new guidelines regarding the naming of educational institutions after eminent personalities. The Department has made it clear that the name of a school would not be changed on the mere basis of financial donations. The school would be named after prominent people excelling in various fields and earning top most honors in States or the Country. Before naming the school after a famous personality, his/her life and achievements would be minutely analyzed.
Stating this here today, a spokesperson of the Education Department said that if a person makes a donation concerning some limited projects e.g. construction of a room, library, laboratory or shed then the name of that person would be engraved on the plaque outside the project.
The spokesperson further said that the schools would be named only after freedom fighters belonging to the State, persons contributing in the historical and cultural spheres, gallantry award winners of military and civil operations, state or national level award winners in arts, sports, literary and public life
The spokesperson elaborated that a state level committee would scrutinize the case of changing the name of an educational institution before sending it over to the State Government. The Director General, School Education would be the Chairman of the committee while the Secretary, Punjab School Education Board, a representative of the Secretary of the Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department, Deputy Commissioner of the concerned district, D.P.I. (Secondary Education), D.P.I. (Elementary Education) and 2 academicians would be the members of the committee.
