Ludhiana, May 5, 2015: The ongoing campaign on “Cultivation of recommended varieties of paddy,” organized by the Department of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana has entered fourth week. Dr R.K.Kalra, Head of the department said the short duration recommended varieties help to save precious water resources. 
The PAU experts, Dr J.S. Bhalla and Dr T.S. Riar emphasized on the cultivation of PAU recommended paddy varieties like “PR 124” as it takes only 135 days to mature and yields 30.5 q/acre. The campaign was undertaken at Sudhar and Jagraon block of Ludhiana district through posters, discussions with farmers, by making announcement in the gurdwaras and distribution of pamphlets. 
The scientists namely Dr Dharminder Singh, Dr Vipan Rampal, Dr Pankaj Kumar and Dr Lavleesh Garg discouraged the cultivation of un-recommended long duration paddy varieties, especially, Pusa-44. They covered the villages including Swadi, Talwandi Kalan, Talwandi Khurd, Mullanpur, Boparai Kalan, Dhatt, Pandori, Halwara, Attiana, Sarabha, Kular, Jassowal Sra, Pabian, Meerpur Hans, Sidhwan Khurd, Chownkiman, Narangwal, Gujjarwal, Jodhan, Leel, Dhalian, Saholi, Abbuwal, Lalton, Kheri Jhameri, Alamgir, Sayian Khurd, Dehlon, Rangian, Pohir and Lehra under the campaign. The response of the farmers was overwhelming.
