Rs 3 lakhs to family members of farmer Surjit Singh who committed suicide

Ferozepur, May 2, 2016: The district administration today handed over a cheque of Rs 3 lakhs to the family members of farmer Surjit Singh (65), who had committed suicide by consuming poison on Saturdaymorning. He was later admitted in a private hospital, where he breathed his last yesterday morning. Surjit Singh, who was a resident of Village Waryam Singh Wala under Mamdot Block was under heavy debt and due to financial stress, he had decided to end his life. Today DPS Kharbanda, Deputy Commissioner Ferozepur while expressing grief over the incident, said that an emergency meeting was convened today to take stock of the situation and ascertain the reason behind the incident. He said that as per the instructions of the state government, the next of kin Jaswinder Kaur, who is wife of the victim, was handed over the amount of Rs. Three Lakh.

This was third such incident in this border region, where a farmer had committed suicide. Few days ago,Major Singh (62) a resident of Village Shehjada Sant Singh in Zira sub-division, had killed himself due to poor financial condition. Earlier also, two months ago, a farmer identified as Harbans Singh (60) of Village Karma had committed suicide due to wretched financial conditions.
