QRT team lauds PAU for providing good quality seed

Ludhiana, October 18, 2014: A Quinquennial Review Team (QRT) for the period 2009-2014, constituted by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under the chairmanship of Padma Bhushan, Dr M. Mahadevappa, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad and former Chairman, Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, visited the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. Earlier, they visited fields of different seed production centres of PAU. The team was on a two-day visit to review the on-going All India Coordinated Research Projects and ICAR Seed Project under tribal sub-plan on seed. Nodal officers from twelve centres from north zone presented their progress report of last five years.

Dr M. Mahadevappa highly praised PAU for providing good quality seed not only to the state but the whole country. He congratulated Dr J.S. Brar, Director (Seeds), PAU for getting “Best Outstation Scientist Award” alongwith a cash prize of Rs 10000, and the “ICAR Centre of Excellence Award” in seed production.

Dr S. Rajendra Prasad, Project Director, AICRP-NSP appreciated the commendable contributions made by PAU as a leader in agriculture, education, research and to overall agricultural growth through quality seed. He also told the house that PAU is undertaking quality seed production alone in 3500 acres, which gets reflected in 100 per cent seed replacement rate of high yielding varieties in Punjab. He wished that other centres should also emulate and follow the successful strategy on seed production being practiced in Punjab.

Dr Ramesh Kumar, Director of Research, PAU, highlighted the role of PAU in pioneering  green revolution in the state.

Earlier, Dr R.K. Gumber, Additional Director of Research (Crop Improvement) welcomed the QRT members and delegates from various AICRP centres.

Dr. J.S. Brar proposed the vote of thanks.
