PTU to host 17th Punjab Science Congress & Expo at its Kapurthala Campus from Feb 14-16; Participation from Russia, Italy, USA, Canada & South Korea

Jalandhar, February 10, 2014: Punjab Technical University (PTU) is hosting the 17th Punjab Science Congress & Expo in association with Punjab Academy of Sciences (PAS) at its Kapurthala campus from February 14 to 16. The main theme of this three-day event is Science & Technology for Sustainable Growth. The Science Congress shall emphasise on the fact that growth benefits of science and technology should be recurring and not produce one-time results only.

Prof Goverdhan Mehta of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has consented to be the Chief Guest. The key note shall be delivered by Prof H Deep Saini, Vice President & Principal, University of Toronto, Mississauga, Canada. The Science Congress shall have participation from more around 1000 delegates including eminent academicians, senior researchers, faculty, young scholars, students from Punjab & other states. Representatives from Russia, Italy, USA, Canada & South Korea have confirmed their participation too. Besides lectures from scientists and opportunities to meet them in person, an industry-academia meet is also being organized.  The Science Congress shall feature 40 talks, 3 plenary sessions with 6 speakers, 4 technical sessions including one for young scientist, 133 oral presentations and 240 poster presentations besides awards in various categories.       

PAS shall be awarding Honorary Fellowships to following scientists and educationists - Dr. TS Kler, Executive Director, Escorts Heart Institute & Research Centre; Dr. Harbans Lal, Emeritus Professor, Pharmacology & Neuroscience, University of Texas, Health Science Centre; Dr. Kishan Lal, Former Director, National Physical Laboratory; Dr. KK Bhasin, Professor, department of Chemistry, Punjab University; and Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Vice Chancellor, PTU for their contribution in respective domains.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Dr. Rajneesh Arora, VC, PTU, said, “PTU has been the epicentre for advancements in technical education. Scientific developments are of utility only if they are of use to the mankind. Researchers need to keep in mind the requirements of the industry. Punjab has the potential to become the global hub of higher education and initiatives like these shall take us one step closer.”

Dr. Anirudh Pratap Singh, Dean – Research, Innovation & Consultancy (RIC), said, “Considering PTU’s recent strides, Kapurthala Campus is an obvious choice as a venue. As Chairman of Organizing Committee of the Congress & Expo, I believe that benefits of technology should move from labs to market shelves faster at affordable prices. Unless this is achieved, all R&D would only be of academic interest. We at PTU have been striving for multi-dimensional socio-technological economic growth and initiatives like these will help us realize the goal.”
