PFC of TIFAC, GoI granted Patent Certificate to PU Inventor Dr Shishu of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Chandigarh, June 1, 2015: Patent Facilitating Centre (PFC) of Technology Information Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC), Government of India has granted Patent Certificate to the Panjab University (PU) Inventor Dr Shishu of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The patent application of PU Assistant Professor Dr Gurpreet Kaur has also been approved by TIFAC for filing a Patent in India.
The information was given by PU Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof Arun Kumar Grover while presiding over the PU Syndicate meeting on Sunday.
PU VC Prof Grover informed that Dr Shishu was granted patent for Indian Patent No.265132 with the title ‘Sustained release pharmaceutical compositions containing curcumin and beta-cyclodextrin’ on February 9, 2015. Dr Gurpreet Kaur is Assistant Professor at PU Department of Chemistry and her patent application is entitled ‘Formulation of Transition Metal Based Cationic Metalosomes’. 
PU VC informed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the upgradation of Department of Zoology and Department of Biochemistry from CAS-I to CAS-II and DRS-I to DRS-II programmes respectively. Under the schemes, the Department of Zoology would get Rs. 161.55 lakhs + salary of two Project Fellows for period of five years. The Department of Biochemistry would get Rs. 125.00 lakhs + salary of two Project Fellows for period of five years.
PU Alumnus, Prof. Ajay K. Sood has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), London, in 2015. Prof Sood is the first PU alumnus to receive this honour after Prof Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar. PU Professor, Prof. Gurmail Singh has been appointed as Vice Chancellor of the Akal University, Talwandi Sabo, Distt. Bathinda, Punjab. 
Under the “Visvesvaraya Ph.D. scheme for Electronics and IT”, University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET), PU has been granted project support of 5 full time Ph.D. candidates.
Prof Grover informed the Syndicate about the transfer of five acres piece of land at Muktsar to PU Regional Centre, Muktsar and other important achievements achieved by PU teachers and alumni. He informed that World renowned Science Journal ‘Nature’ has given top rank to PU among the leading science institutions of India. He informed that President of India honoured PU alumna Ms Baljinder Kaur with the National Award of Best Supporting Actress. 
Prof. S.K. Mehta, Department of Chemistry received Haryana Vigyan Ratna Award with cash award of Rs. 2 lakhs for his scientific contributions in the field of Surfactant Chemistry and Nano-Chemistry. Professor Upinder Sawhney of the Department of Economics
got awarded the prestigious DAAD Scientists Exchange Programme Fellowship. Dr Gaurav Gaur from Centre for Social Work and his team was honoured by Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh Mayor, Mrs. Poonam Sharma with an appreciation certificate for running ‘Education Forever Project’, he further informed.  / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
