Person injured by stray bull being treated at Dewan Hospital, Ludhiana.

Ludhiana, July 9, 2014: Stray animals are a big traffic and health risk. Thousands of stray dogs many of those may be suffering from a dreaded disease rabies and thousands of cows and bulls etc are roaming on our roads. Now-a-days there is little grass growing on ground as most of the empty land has been used for construction and all roads and pavements are or coal-tar or concrete. It is a pity to see hungry and thirsty bulls, cows and dogs trying to eat from garbage dumps or from things thrown by unmindful citizens on streets. Not only these poor animals suffer, they also pose a very high risk to the people. All person whether they are on foot, on bicycle, scooter or in cars are exposed to this danger. Very often we see a dog or even badly crushed under a vehicle and dead body of the dog lying on the road. At times we can see accidents between bulls/cows and vehicles.
Ashok Kumar,50, resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony, Salem Tabri, had come out of a temple in the morning and started back on his motor bike back to his home. Soon he saw that a bull being chased by stray dogs is running heads on towards his bike, he took his bike to the other side of the road but unfortunately bull also change the side and collided with him heads on. The horn of the bull pierced his chest wall by about 6inches and both bull and his bike carrying him hit the ground. He being a well known person as an office bearer of that area was immediately taken by the people to hospital. He was first taken to Ram Charitable from where he was referred to DMCH. He however decided to come to Dewan Hospital & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Center from where many members of his family had got operated earlier.
He was found to have an open wound of the chest on right side and a tension pneumothorax. prompt intervention by tube thorocostomy and exploration & repair under anesthesia at Dewan Hospital & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Center, saved the person. He is now recovered as far as his chest is concerned while the fractured bones are healing. He seriously wants that his story be published, for which he has given in writing so that the menace of stray bulls, cows, dogs can be highlighted.
“I personally feel that we Indians have lot of respect for animals especially cows and bulls and I feel disturbed to see these pious animals suffering without food, water on the roads and exposed to accidents”, said Dr Narotam Dewan, General & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Dewan Hospital & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Center, Ludhiana. He added “it can be seen often that a poor emaciated cow is being chased by dogs. When I visited Holland and Austria I found that all cows there have a number tagged to their ear and they are registered and taken care off. May be because we don't take care of our animals and humans the curses of suffering animals and humans in our country are keeping us poor and dirty. There must be some system force all persons keeping the cattle to register the cattle and get it tagged and not to leave it on road when it does not give milk and also all stray animals be shifted to places specially created for these”.
