Chandigarh, November 17, 2015: The Department of Art History and Visual Arts, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh today organised two lectures by Prof.Gail Levin, Distinguished Professor of Art History, American Studies, and Women's Studies at the Graduate Center and Baruch College of the City University of New York and a Fulbright-Nehru Distinguished Chair on the November 16 and 17.
The acknowledged authority on the American realist painter Edward Hopper and author of Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography on the first day Prof. Levin delivered a talk on ‘Edward Hopper: American Realist Painter and his Influence on Cinema’. Drawing upon the close association of the artist with the world of cinema initially through the posters that he made for film companies such as Éclair, she highlighted his great interest in the art of cinema and how films such as Psycho and Pennies from Heaven brought his paintings such as House by the Railroad, which was the first work acquired for the Museum of Modern Art, New York Movie and Nighthawks alive on celluloid. The lecture was richly illustrated through images of the now iconic works of Hopper and film clips.
On the second day Prof. Levin delivered a lecture on ‘American Abstract Expressionism: Genesis of a Style’. An extensive overview of the movement she shed light not just the aesthetics of the art but also its political context. Speaking of Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, William De Kooning and Mark Rothko among others the experience and practice behind the images was brought out with great lucidity. Both the lectures were thought provoking and very well received, and were widely attended by faculty and students of associate departments and colleges./ (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
