Noted Journalist and Author Sir Mark Tully interacts with PU History department alumni, students and research scholars

Chandigarh, October 17, 2016: Noted Journalist and Author Sir Mark Tully today interacted with the Panjab University (PU) History department alumni, students and research scholars at the PU.
The Department of History had organized academic interaction in collaboration with AITIHASIKI (Department of History PU Alumni Association) at PL Anand Auditorium in sector 14 PU Campus.
PU Vice Chancellor(VC) Prof Arun Kumar Grover presided over the function.
Producer BBC Radio Mr. Frank Sterling and noted journalist Ms. Gillian Wright also accompanied Sir Mark Tully on the occasion.
Sir Mark Tully addressed the students on the themes of ‘Partition and its impact on India today’; ‘Governance in India: How it can be improved’ and ‘Need for life style change if we are to cope with climate change’. He said that India has a
tremendous potential for governance and rich democratic tradition. However, he emphasised on the need to reorient the governance and administrative structure. While speaking on the climatic changes, Mark Tully dwelled upon the need of life style changes to cope with the environmental changes.
The session was well attended. A volley of questions was raised by the audience, Professors from different faculties, and the students. Those questions were adequately addressed by the speaker.
Earlier Mark Tully visited the PU history department and interacted with the faculty, alumnae and students of the Department of History today. He also recorded a session for BBC radio program on the theme, Partition and its Impact on India Today, looking at the issues of partition from the point of view of young Indians today. The BBC radio programme would be telecasted sometime in February 2017.
PU VC Prof. Arun Kumar Grover spoke on history and evolution of educational institutions in India.
The Chairperson of Department of History Prof. Sukhmani Bal Riar introduced the theme and acted as a coordinator for the interaction and also proposed a vote of thank.
Later, Sir Mark Tully exclusively interacted with Prof. Sukhmani Bal Riar on historiographical trends of writing the history of partition and emphasised on recording the history of partition.
