National conference on Emerging Trends in Inequalities: Caste, Class and Gender in the North West India organised at GNDU

Amritsar, November 3, 2015: The Department of Sociology organized 18th North West Indian Sociological Association’s national conference on ‘Emerging Trends in Inequalities: Caste, Class and Gender in the North West India’ at the Guru Nanak Dev University.  The University has a great history of 43 years and is accredited with a CGPA of 3.5 out of 4 with 'A' Grade which is the highest for any University in the country by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore. The Department of Sociology, set up in 1976, commemorated its 40th year by hosting this academic conference. Apart from teaching, the department has contributed 53 books to sociology and numerous publications in prestigious national and international sociological journals. 
The theme of the conference as convened by the President of (NWISA) Prof. Paramjit Singh Judge, Department of Sociology, Guru Nanak Dev University was reflected in the diversity of sociological issues that were discussed and deliberated especially in the areas of gender, class and caste inequalities, agrarian crisis, problems of rural areas including the border zones; concerns pertaining to neo-liberal development and tribes; community, and rehabilitation; media and politics of representations;  diaspora and migration. The deliberations reflected upon the need for sociological studies on the interconnected structures and transformations in inequalities of caste, class and gender and the role of enlightened and critical education in alleviating discrimination and exclusion. The conference witnessed the participation of researchers and academics from many colleges and universities in the North West region- including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and beyond.  
The NWISA conference released three books published by Rawat, Jaipur. The books were released Hon. Vice Chancellor, A. S. Brar, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and Prof Satyapal Gautam, Professor of Philosophy at the School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. This included an edited book by Prof Sadhu Ram Ahlawat and Prof Neerja Ahlawat titled ‘Crises of Social transformation in India’. The other two edited books were on ‘Indian Diaspora between modernity and Tradition’ by Prof Paramjit Singh Judge and another on ‘Contemporary Gender issues: Identity, Status and Empowerment’ by Prof Gurpreet Bal on select papers from the Guru Nanak Journal of Sociology, which is a bi-annual journal of the Department of Sociology that has been continuously published since 1980. The conference was sponsored by the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), North-West Regional Centre, Chandigarh, Punjab./ (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
