Ludhiana, July 18, 2016: Liver Disease burden is immense in the state of Punjab. Although exact disease statistics are not available in Punjab, an estimated 300 liver transplants are required per year in our state alone. DMCH Management is always committed in providing comprehensive quality care at affordable prices to all its patients and over time DMCH has emerged as one of the leading referral centres catering to the need of the sick patients in the region. With this in mind, Liver Transplant services were started in DMCH 18 months ago and 5 liver transplants have been successfully performed so far.
Dr HRS Girn, Chief Surgeon, DMCH Liver Transplant Unit stressed that advanced liver disease care can be split into four main phases-Pre transplant or liver failure case, liver transplant, immediate post liver transplant and follow up or maintenance care. This has definitely improved patient experience and outcome and we are now in a position to provide every treatment for all liver diseases under one roof.
Dr Ajit Sood (Professor & Head of Gastroenterology) stressed need for patients with liver disease to present early to specialist centre. Only medicines or only surgery is not the answer for liver diseases. Patients need different interventions at different stages of their disease and best results come when these interventions are carried out in a timely fashion by experts in the field. It is best when an integrated plan can be made for a patient from the very beginning as it allows smooth treatment of the patient before the disease process has advanced to a terminal stage which in turn works out to be economically and personally beneficial for patients and their families.
DMCH Management is committed to uplift standards of patient care and education in the region by developing these islands of excellence in individual fields of medicine.
