Get medical aid for brain stroke within 4.5 hours, Experts
Ludhiana, June 30, 2014: Brain stroke, if not treated within 4.5 hours, can lead to permanent brain damage and paralysis. These 4.5 hours are the crucial window period hours, which once lost can cause unprecedented losses, said Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr.Vishnu Gupta and Consultant Neurologist Dr.Alok Jain at Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana sharing their views about recent advances in acute stroke management here today.
Dr.Jain explained that stroke is a potentially treatable condition in many cases. When the patient reaches an adequate medical facility within 4.5 hours of stroke, he or she can be injected with a brain clot dissolving drug, which restores the blood supply to brain and reduces the residual paralysis.
Citing examples of two patients recently admitted to Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana a 60 year old lady with right sided paralysis and a 68 year gentleman with left leg paralysis, Dr Jain said that these patients were instantly given clot dissolving drug on their arrival to hospital.
"These patients had near complete recovery of paralysis and went back home walking without support within few days," he said flanked by both the patients who shared their experiences.
Dr Gupta added that since such treatment carries a bleeding risk as well it is best administered under expert guidance only.
He said that WHO estimated death due to stroke in India every year is 1880, many more are left permanently paralysed, disabled or dependant, altering their course of life, besides causing large economic burden on their families and society. "In such scenario it becomes very important to create awareness amongst general masses on stroke and its management," he said.
Dr. Gupta, who holds special expertise in interventional techniques, said Fortis Hospital Ludhiana has highly advanced facilities of intra-arterial clot removal and mechanical clot removal as well, options which are useful in stroke patients presenting a little later or carrying a high bleeding risk.
