Ludhiana, August 23, 2016: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Amritsar organised Parthenium Awareness Week from 16 to 22 August 2016. Different activities like Kisan Ghosties, Training camps, oath to eradicate Parthenium etc. were organized in the adopted villages (Nag Kalan, Nag Khurd, Rakh Nag, Makowal and Dhaul Kalan) and urban-peri urban areas for creating awareness among the people for eradication of Parthenium. The premises of KVK building was also made free of this weed by the staff.

During this week, participants were told about the adverse effects of congress grass or gajar booti (parthenium), one of the most obnoxious weeds and its management through weedicides and organic agents. A literature on parthenium eradication was also distributed among the participants. The experts of KVK made aware the participants about the ill effects of Parthenium (Congress grass) to human and animal health and also told about the control measures of this noxious weed chemically by spraying 1 litre Roundup & manually by uprooting the congress grass. They also told the participants that the most efficient time of control of this weed is January and February before flowering takes place, to prevent it for further dispersal. Safety measures adoptions while uprooting the noxious weed were also advised to the participants. They also advised them to make compost from this grass.
