Harvard University Professor motivated LPU Scientists to research on Personalized Medicines

Jalandhar, December 4, 2015: The School of Biotechnology & Biosciences of Lovely Professional University conducted interactive session on ‘System Biology and Personalized Medicine’ for LPU students and faculty-members. Renowned Bio-Informatician from Harvard Medical School (Boston) USA, Dr Manoj K Bhasin reached LPU Campus for this great research boosting expedition to ultimately improve the human condition. His lecture motivated LPU scientists to research in the area of personalized medicine which is an ability to modify treatments for the unique characteristics of each cancer patient in particular. It is being understood world over that personalized medicines provide better treatments and fewer side effects, in comparison to traditional treatment through radiotherapy & chemotherapy. Dr Manoj also addressed researchers at PGI (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) Chandigarh.

Invoking LPU researchers for easy medication and complete eradication of ‘Cancer’, Dr Manoj informed: “The study of medicine is a powerful integration of science, technologies, experience, and experiment. It enables its students to lessen human pain and suffering wherever in the world it may occur. To study research oriented medicine is to be prepared to play a leading role in such a humane quest.” Dr Manoj further informed: “The type of cancer an individual has, and how it gets treated, is no longer just about where in the body the cancer started- breast, lungs or colon. Now, doctors decide how to control cancer by researching in depth about the specific molecular and genetic makeup of their individual patient’s tumor.” Dr Manoj explained in details what personalized medicine means for cancer patients; where personalized cancer stands today; and also reviewed personalized medicine for cancer prevention. He also shared success stories of genomic medicines quoting interesting examples.

About visiting LPU and for further joint projects with it, Dr Manoj shared: “It is indeed a great experience on having exposure to energetic environment at LPU campus, which is definitely the best campus that I visited in India.   It was also great to discuss small focused projects on delivery of genes oriented medicine data. Working further with LPU students & faculty, I will be happy to provide an opportunity to abler ones at LPU to visit my lab at Harvard Medical School for internship and carrying out joint projects.  Getting progress, I will be further happy to have joint grant from ‘National Science Foundation’ on such projects.” He also assured: “As per my keen interest in Indian food and Ayurveda therapies, I will be glad to evaluate LPU pharmacy products.”

LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal advised young scientists at university to work more in this field as researchers and cancer centers are keen to embrace this personalized caring approach. He asked LPU students and faculty to be up to the expectations and aspirations of the elite guest. Sharing further, Mr Mittal informed: “The US President Barack Obama has also announced many millions investment for such humane initiative which is to provide great opportunities for new medical breakthroughs. I personally feel that extending beyond cancer personalized medicine encompasses all health issues; however, cancer is a major focus.”
