Grandson of slain Punjab CM Beant Singh commits suicide with gunshot

Ludhiana, May 29, 2016: Harkirat Singh who had attempted to kill himself in a bungalow located at Sector 5 in Chandigarh today, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Chandigarh.

According to information, Harkirat (39), who was the grandson of the slain Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, committed suicide with a gunshot.

Harkirat was Sarpanch of the village Kotli in Ludhiana district.

He was the youngest son of former Punjab minister Tej Parkash Singh.

Harkirat’s elder brother Gurkirat Singh Kotli is MLA from Khanna in this district.

The cause of depression that led to occurrence of this tragic incident is still not known.

He was a graduate.

He had kept alive the family tradition of unanimously getting elected as sarpanch of Kotli village. The village is also called as “Kotla Afgana”.

He had followed the footsteps of his grandfather Beant Singh who had started his political career after becoming the village Sarpanch first and then rose to the post of chief minister.

A wave of sorrow has spread in and around the Kotli village.

Meanwhile, former DCC (U) Ludhiana president Pawan Dewan on being contact told City Air News that the today’s tragic incident occurred between 12-30 pm and 1-00 pm. He termed the incident as the most unfortunate. He said it was an untimely death and a great loss to the family.

Chandigarh: Dr Shakeel Ahmad, General Secretary in Charge Punjab congress today condoled the death of S Harkirat Singh, Grandson of late chief minister S Beant Singh in Chandigarh. S Harkirat Singh was the son of S Tej Parkash Singh and brother of S Gurkirat Singh Kotli MLA. Dr Ahmad expressed sorrow with family of S. Harkirat, and prayed that god must keep his soul in peace.

Capt Amarinder mourns tragic death of Harkirat, Abhitej
Chandigarh: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today expressed shock and grief over the death of Harkirat Singh, the grandson of former Chief Minister late Beant Singh and Abhitej Sandhu, son of Abhey Sandhu, who is the nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, in two separate incidents. In a condolence message Capt Amarinder said, it was quite unfortunate that two youth had died in the prime of their youth in tragic circumstances. Expressing sympathies with the bereaved families, he said, it was an irreparable loss for both of them and he stood by them in this hour of their grief. He prayed for the peace to the departed souls and strength to the two families to face this tragedy.

Channi expresses sorrow over death of S Harkirat Singh
Chandigarh: S Charanjit Singh Channi, leader of opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha today condoled the untimely death of S Harkirat Singh, Grandson of late chief minister S Beant Singh in Chandigarh. Channi in a condolence message said that Harkirat was very polite and humble in nature and he was very good human being. Channi expressed sorrow with family of Harkirat, and prayed that god must keep his soul in peace.
