Jalandhar, January 17, 2016: Gatka teams today showcased their mesmerising combative and defensive skills during the traditional martial art demonstrations held at second Doaba Gatka Cup at Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan Talhan near Jalandhar cantonment.
This Virsa Sambhal Gatka tournament was conducted by the International Sikh Martial Art Academy (ISMAA) in which IG Jalandhar range Arpit Shukla, former IG Kartar Singh veteran wrestler, ISMAA chairman Harjeet Singh Grewal and finance secretary Baljit Singh Saini, Joint Secretary Gatka Federation of India Avtar Singh were also present.
Speaking on the occasion IG Jalandhar range Arpit Shukla said that Gatka is a self-defensive game which also imbibes cultural and traditional values among the youth. "It is need of the hour to promote this centuries old traditional sport so as to wean away the youth from the menace of habit forming drugs", he added.
He said that language, culture and traditions adds their role for the essential growth of any nation. "Such folk and traditional games are necessary to channelize the energy of youth for constructive development", he added. The ISMAA also honoured Joint Secretary Gatka Federation of India Avtar Singh with 'Gatka award' for his exemplary contribution to the promotion and preservation of this martial art.
