Ludhiana, April 28, 2018: A 52 year old farmer from Village Khadon in Ludhiana was in serious trouble. He was suffering for the last 20 years from a condition called varicose veins. Then, suddenly he had a massive bleed from these enlarged dysfunctional veins and was admitted to Kulwant Heart Centre. Dr Kulwant Singh, Consultant Cardiologist, realized that the bleeding could be dangerous. He consulted Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Chairman Cardio-Vascular & Endovascular Sciences at the Cardiac Care Center, a unit of Ludhiana Mediways Hospital. Dr Bedi, who is one of the senior most Cardio-Vascular Surgeons of India had earlier introduced the minimally invasive method of treating varicose veins in Punjab. He is Secretary of the prestigious Venous Association of India and is the Patron and Founder Chairman of the Association of North Zone Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgeons.
The previous techniques of treatment for varicose veins had the problem of pain and need for large amounts of anesthesia. For this patients’s case, Dr Bedi used a new technique called Glue Closure Technique for the first time in this region. This modern technique is a simple technique that does not require application of the previously used high dose of local anesthesia in laser surgery and is painless. A special catheter is introduced in the patient’s vein and the vein is ablated along with a special imported bio-compatible glue (VenaBLOCK - medical super glue) .
Dr Bedi explained that varicose veins can occur in any part of the body, but are especially seen in the legs. This painful condition results in enlarged and prominent ugly veins, which are of cosmetic concern. Some of the most common symptoms of varicose veins are visible, twisted veins that are purple or blue in color. Quite often, there is pain or a heavy feeling in the leg; burning, throbbing; muscle cramping and swelling in lower legs. The patient treated for the first time with this technique in Ludhiana, had an additional problem of massive bleeding from the diseased veins. Dr Bedi explained that bleeding is a troublesome complication of varicose veins and is potentially dangerous. Along with bleeding, this patient had a non healing ulcer. Such a stage is called C6 – the most advanced type of varicose vein.
Dr. H.S. Bedi informed, “The new Glue closure treatment uses a patented VENABLOCK catheter. It is a relatively new endovascular technique for curing venous re-flux disease. This technique is especially recommended for people, who are sensitive to needle pricks as well as to those, who are overweight. Speaking about the technique, Dr Bedi said, “This technique is designed to plug veins without local anesthesia and a trail of multiple cuts. This new treatment is less painful, can treat a leg in 5 minutes and within one hour, the patient can go home. It is important that a trained expert like a vascular surgeon performs this surgery.”
Dr Kulwant Singh said, “The disease marks an indication of a malfunction of the venous system and should be evaluated by a vascular surgery specialist.
Dr Bedi further commented, “We have been treating varicose veins through modern modalities of lasers, radio-frequency and foam sclerotherapy. The glue procedure is a new, safe and painless method of therapy. Patients can return home the same day, as compared to conventional surgery where they had to be hospitalized. The glue procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is scar-free. No cuts or stitches are involved in this technique. As this technique causes minimal damage to tissues, it is especially useful in patients, who are on blood thinners, are obese, have a groin infection, are old and in patients, who are scared of surgery. Patients can return to normal life within 24 hours. Yesterday, Dr. Bedi published an editorial on an International trial of therapy for such a condition.
Dr Bedi and Dr Kulwant said that at the Cardiac Care Centre in Ludhiana Mediways Hospital, we have always believed in introducing cutting edge technologies for excellent patient care. Dr Baldeep Singh and Mr Gurmeet Singh Kular, Chairman and Managing Director respectively of Ludhiana Mediways affirmed that the Centre is manned round the clock by fully trained senior professionals and is equipped with the latest equipment.
