Breaking: Tobacco Products Not To Be Sold By Unlicensed Vendors In Punjab

Chandigarh, September 27, 2015: The Punjab government has issued directions to all Municipal Corporation commissioners to ensure closure of all tobacco vends/shops in the state running without any license under Punjab Tobacco Vends Fees Act-1953.
According to an official spokesman of the government, Director Local Government Punjab Mr.Priyank Bharti has through a circular directed the Regional Deputy Directors of Municipal Committees and all the Commissioners Municipal Corporations to check all the shops selling tobacco in their respective areas and order immediate closure if they were being run without required permit.
Ms.Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health said that all kinds of chewable tobacco and sale of loose cigarettes has already been  banned in Punjab and license of a commercial establishment can be cancelled in case of violation of Tobacco Control Act.  She also said that there are many poisonous chemicals in tobacco due to which about 2200 people are killed daily in India. So it is very important to curb this menace. She appealed to common people to help Government in this endeavor.
Appreciating this particular effort of the state government to curb tobacco menace in an organized way, Dr.Mira Aghi, a Behavioral Scientist of international repute said, “In my view this is the most effective step that the Punjab Government has taken. By this it has demonstrated the firm resolve to control the use of tobacco among its people. It proves that the Government of Punjab is people oriented and their welfare has priority over collecting revenue. All other States in the country will benefit following the footsteps of Punjab”.
Meanwhile, Mr.Hussan Lal C-FDA Punjab issued a circular to all DCs and CSs that COTPA 2003 is being implemented in all districts of Punjab. License under FSSAI is issued to any eatery/shop/commercial establishment only to sell safe food products only and not to sell harmful tobacco products. Designated Food Safety Officers and FSOs are empowered to to cancel license of any Eatery/shop/Commercial establishment, licensed under FSSAI, if Tobacco products are sold in the premises.
