Chandigarh, May 9, 2015: In continuation to   Punjab Food & Drugs Administration initiative for tightening the noose against fake drugs sellers and manufacturers, two teams of Drugs Regulatory Officers led by Dinesh Gupta, Zonal Licencing Authority, Ludhiana and Vinay Jindal, Zonal Licencing Authority, Sangrur succeeded in detection of one unlicenced wholesale chemist shop at Sant Tower, Pindi Street, Ludhiana, who was found deeply indulged in the stocking & exhibiting for sale and distribution of large quantity of drugs most of them labeled as "Physician Sample Not for Sale" and suspected to be "Spurious drugs". Directions for the raid were given by Hussan Lal, Secretary Health cum Commissioner, Food & Drugs Administration (FDA), Punjab. Punjab's Health Minister, Surjit Kumar Jyani had already earlier directed the department officers to act tough against the violators of  Drugs & Cosmetic Act.
The team seized medicines worth rupees 5,68000 approximately from the said place. The 2nd team succeeded in seizing drugs approximately 2 crores, those were found to be manufactured & packed without having a mandatory licence under the provisions of Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940. Apart for this another 31 types of articles including machine & packing material were also seized by the team.
Giving further information in this regard, Hussan Lal revealed that the seized drugs are suspected to be of doubtful quality since these drugs are being manufactured & packed under the uncontrolled environment. This activity of manufacture & packing of drugs at Sikand Tower is clandestine activity reportedly carried out by some antisocial elements. It is anticipated that the drugs seized from the manufacture premises contains Anabolic Steroids that are widely misused by youngsters in sports and gyms for early development of body muscles and giving body builder shape. However use of such Anabolic Steroids like Stanazolol without medical advice, exerts deleterious effects on human body. Commissioner FDA further disclosed that both the teams have drawn 16 samples of the drugs for test and analysis for their identification and quality checks. Further investigation in both these cases is on and the department is considering both the cases for prosecuting the offenders in court of law. Experts reveal that in such cases, there is a provision of minimum 3 years of rigorous imprisonment with fine of not less than 1 lakh rupees under the law. The fine may be also enhanced to 3 times of the value of drugs seized from the accused persons.
Hussan Lal appealed the public to purchase the drugs from authorized sources only & must get a bill issued from the chemist against the purchase of drugs in order to ensure that the drugs purchased by them are genuine. He stated that the Drugs Regulatory Officers who have done this job will be suitably rewarded with appreciation letters.
