Ludhiana: Alterative system of Veterinary medicine is set for a boost in Punjab with the proposed setting up of the first Veterinary Ayurveda Research Centre of India at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) Ludhiana. Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Science (CCRAS), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has approved the setting of Veterinary Ayurveda Research Centre. This will be the first centre in the country to promote research in the new and upcoming branch of Veterinary Ayurveda.

Dr. Suresh Kumar Sharma, Head of the Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology briefed that several Veterinary colleges and universities across the country had applied for the Ayurveda centre and subsequently four veterinary institutes in different states were shortlisted by the Union Government for further consideration. A high level delegation from CCRAS, Ministry of AYUSH visited GADVASU in June, 2016 to assess the infrastructure and research being undertaken in this field. Taking note of the excellent infrastructure and highly competent faculty of GADVASU, the central committee expressed satisfaction and appreciated the research work being undertaken in ethnoveterinary medicine at GADVASU, under the dynamic leadership of Vice Chancellor, Dr. A. S. Nanda. He expressed hope that this research centre would provide a much needed launching platform for integrated programmes in the development of a holistic approach towards animal health care. CCRAS will appoint six officials at this centre, under the administrative control of GADVASU. Research activities will be undertaken in the form of intramural/collaborative and extramural research projects.

Dr. S. N. S. Randhawa, Former Director of Research and Professor, Department of Veterinary Medicine, GADVASU, informed that University has over a period of time, established itself as a centre for excellence in ethno-pharmacology and Veterinary Medicine and the research work being undertaken in this field is being recognized at national level. Dr. JPS Gill, Director of Research told that research funding for ethno-veterinary medicine by the centre is expected to increase several fold which would support focused attention to strengthen existing research facilities and to ensure a time-bound research programme.

Dr. A. S. Nanda, congratulated the Scientists of the University on this achievement and said that GADVASU has always been the frontrunner to conduct adaptive research in the areas of national and state priorities and conducts need based research to cater to the farmers’ needs. GADVASU has made remarkable progress in all the fields of research and with the setting up of National level Ayurveda Research centre, it will emerge as a leading institute to address the problems of the livestock sector via indigenous means.
