Ludhiana, September 17, 2016: Department of Ophthalmology (Eye) recently performed a very rare case of cataract surgery on a sixty years old patient.
According to Dr Sumeet Chopra (Professor of Ophthalmology), patient Suman Devi (name changed),a resident of Ludhiana was referred with complaint of constant loss of vision in left eye for the past five years. Earlier, she had consulted various eye hospitals and was advised cataract surgery. But as she was unable to lie straight for more than ten years because of a problem in the neck, doctors had told her to get cataract surgery done under general anesthesia. After getting consultation from various eye hospitals, the patient finally got herself examined in DMCH by Dr Sumeet Chopra and surgery was done of the patient under Topical Anesthesia which is ‘No injection, No patch, No suture’ cataract surgery. As the patient was afraid of getting the surgery done under general anesthesia, she was postponing it for the past few years. The cataract had become very mature which increases the risk of it turning into glaucoma (kala motia).
Many cases with similar complex problems like cervical spondylosis, scoliosis, back deformities, post cardiopulmonary resuscitation are being routinely done under Topical Anesthesia. Dr Sumeet Chopra recently performed Topical Phako recently on a patient from USA whom doctors there were not doing as she had epilepsy.
Secretary of DMCH Managing Society- Sh Prem Kumar Gupta informed that Department of Ophthalmology (Eye) is equipped with the latest state-of-art technology for most advanced types of cataract surgery including Multifocal and Toric lenses. DMCH also has the advanced machines for treatment of vitreoretinal diseases including High Definition OCT, Digital FFA, Green Laser and Oertli vitrectomy.
This photo of patient was taken thirty minutes after the surgery. The advantage of this technique is that the patient can resume his routine activities just few hours after getting operated.
