Chandigarh, September 11, 2013: Asserting that complaint against Congress president Sonia Gandhi in a US court by some self-styled rights activists was an act of cowardice, former Chief Minister and Permanent Invitee to the Congress Working Committee Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday strongly condemned the complaint saying it was very much the defiance of Sikh principles to try to implicate someone wrongly and that too when she had gone to the US for medical treatment.

In a strongly worded statement Capt Amarinder said, the complaint against Gandhi has been lodged with clear malafide intentions for seeking cheap publicity. He observed, otherwise it defies logic to complain against someone who was nowhere near the government at the time the riots took place nor has she any authority to punish those accused or guilty.

Referring to the reasons put forth by the complainants that she was allegedly shielding the accused in the 1984 riots, Capt Amarinder pointed out, Gandhi does not control the courts as all those accused are being tried in the courts of law. “Where does the question of her protecting them arise?” he asked, while expressing surprise as how could the US federal court issue exparte summons to Gandhi without giving her a chance to put forward her point of view.

Capt Amarinder said, it was highly condemnable on part of those claiming themselves to be fighting for justice to try to blackmail someone by using some unexplained law when she had gone there for medical treatment. “This is just an act of cowardice which no Sikh can support or approve of”, he asserted while pointing out how wrong it was to try to drag someone into legal wrangle when she was undergoing medical treatment and when  she was nowhere and in no way related to the incidents referred to in the complaint.

The former Chief Minister said, what happened in Delhi and other parts of the country in the aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is highly condemnable. “As a humble Sikh even I had resigned in protest against the Operation Bluestar”, he pointed out, while adding, that does not mean that anyone should be falsely blamed or implicated.

“But accusing Gandhi or involving her in any way with those incidents is disgusting and equally condemnable”, he said, while adding, those who were resorting to such cheap tactics were doing no service to those whose rights they were claiming to safeguard.

Capt Amarinder pointed out, India had proper legal system and all those accused are being tried in the courts of law. “Gandhi does not control the courts and nor was she anywhere holding any position of power and influence”, he asserted while saying that those responsible for lodging the frivolous complaint should better understand as what they are scoring by these acts.
