Workshop On Revival Of Village Ponds At PAU

The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, in collaboration with PAU Ludhiana organising a two-day national workshop on “Revival of Village ponds” in different parts of country.

Ludhiana, May 28, 2015: The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, in collaboration with Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) organised a two-day national workshop on “Revival of Village ponds” in different parts of country.

The Chief Guest, Dr H. S. Sur, Former Consultant, Planning Commission (GOI) said the ground water is receding at very fast rates particularly in north India states of Punjab, Haryana and UP along with deterioration of water quality. Dr Bhoop Singh, Director DST, while delivering his inaugural address, said “India is expected to face severe water scarcity if proper steps are not undertaken to harvest rain water efficiently.”

Dr S. S. Kukal, Professor of Soil Conservation, PAU and Coordinator of the workshop, said the major aim was to develop a network project for reviving village ponds through scientific techniques for storage and efficient utilization of rainwater. Dr H. S. Thind, Head. Department of Soil Science informed that after brainstorming discussions, scientists were able to develop a broad outline of network proposal, to be submitted to DST for funding.

Dr Manmohanjit Singh, Director, RRS, Ballowal Saunkhri while proposing the vote of thanks, said research projects on the revival of village ponds is expected to start by October 2015. The workshop was attended by scientists from 20 states from all over the country, who highlighted the status of dysfunctional village ponds and the scope to harvest rain water.
