Western Sydney University delegation visited Department of Psychology at Panjab University

Chandigarh, November 14, 2016: Western Sydney University (WSU) delegation today visited the Department of
Psychology at Panjab University(PU).
The delegation is led by Director Engagement and Senior Lecturer in Psychology, WSU Dr. Renu Narchal. WSU has a MoU with PU.
Dr Narchal delivered a talk on “The Circle of Security” to a wide audience. In her talk, she focused on the dynamics of the relationship between the parents and the children and explained that as a part of Parenting, the parents need to
understand that there is a coregulation of emotions between parents and children. If the child is able to share happy as well as sad emotional experiences with parents, then this is the opportunity for the parent to give right kinds of skills to the
child and if a parent is not available when the child needs to share experiences, then the child is unable to sort out those emotions forever. Such like emotions can manifest as insecurities and complexes as the child grows up.
Dr Narchal said that the child goes out to explore the world on its own but keeps connected with its home for sharing its emotional experiences that it has had in the world and keeps coming back for sharing them and then goes out again as it is
secure in the knowledge that there is somebody who will accept all good and bad emotions when it returns. She also related it to the LGBT community who are many a times not accepted by their parents or by their community and therefore miss the
security of such a circle of security. Such absence is a hurt that they carry with them and needs to be addressed.
On this occasion, SAKSHAM, an NGO for the LGBT was represented by Dhananjay Chauhan, the President of SAKSHAM who led the delegation from SAKSHAM. The students of the Department of Psychology WSU and SAKSHAM interacted and explored areas of common interest.
