Week long exhibition on 'Waris Shah the Hir' starts at Panjab University

Chandigarh, October 20, 2016: Week long exhibition on the “Waris Shah the Hir” started today at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh. The exhibition would continue from October 20 to 27, 2016 as part of the 250th anniversary commemoration of Hir Waris (1766).
Padma Shree Surjit Patar inaugurated the exhibition and noted theatre personality Prof.Rani Balbir Kaur was the guest of honour. The Department of History and Department of Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology (A.I.H.C. & A) are organizing the exhibition at the museum of A.I.H.C.& A in Sector 14 Campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Surjit Patar appreciated the visuals exhibited in the exhibition. He highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Qissa of Hir by Waris Shah. On public demand he also recalled two of his poems.
Recalling her days of theatre, Prof Rani Balbir Kaur spoke about the struggle Hir fough for her love in 18th century Punjab. She also recited Hir in her melodious voice which was appreciated by the audience.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the History department Prof SukhmanI Bal Riar welcomed the guests. The curator Prof ID Gaur introduced the theme of the exhibition and Dr. Paru Bal Sidhu proposed vote of thanks.
As many as 83 illustrations/murals/ paintings of Hir and Ranjha, the iconic Punjab lovers are being displayed at the exhibition. The illustrations, murals, pictures and paintings have been collected from the numerous places of India, Pakistan and England.
The exhibition wooed a large number of students and teachers of the University, colleges and citizens of the Chandigarh city. People from other part of Punjab also came to see the exhibition.
