Ludhiana, December 12, 2014: A five-day training course on “Value Addition to Agricultural Bi-Products through Utility and Decorative Articles” concluded at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The Directorate of Extension Education, PAU conducted the course for the home scientists of Kirshi Vigyan Kendras.
Giving details, Dr R.S.Sidhu, Director of Extension Education said that the University experts educated the trainees about income generation through the management of family resources and value addition to agro-wastes. Besides, demonstrations were given on the preparation of wall plates using weeds; and decorative articles using dried flowers and foliage, he added. Further, he said that the experts also demonstrated value addition to paddy straw, dried vegetables, seeds and agro-waste through the preparation of decorative and utility items.
Elaborating, Dr Sidhu said that the resource persons delivered lectures and imparted practical training in the effective use of agricultural bi-products in natural dyes, use of natural dyes for home textile products, use of different mordents in natural dying, and preparation of eco-holi colours, jute-block print, patch work and tie-dye. Value added products from under-utilised jute and hemp, and useful bi-products from cellulosic hosiery waste were some of the other thrust areas, he added.
Further, Dr Sidhu informed that a training course on the “Use, Cleaning and Care of Household Appliances” will be hosted for farm women and rural youth on December 17 and 18. The subject-matter specialists will focus on care and maintenance of cooking and baking appliances, washing machine, geyser, refrigerator and iron. In addition, they will dwell on cooking of fermented foods and baking of cakes in microwave, he said.
