Amritsar, June 11, 2015: A "Three-Week Special Summer School" was inaugurated at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre of the Guru Nanak Dev University. As many as 45 university and college teachers from various parts of the country are participating.

Prof. Nageshwar Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Prof. Nageshwar Rao in his inaugural address shared with the participants valuable practical tips to enhance the listening skills, which are of utmost significance for the teaching profession. Talking about the various constraints of listening comprehension, he asked them to overcome these distractions as listening is also one of the major modes of enhancing the knowledge. Although listening with concentration is a cumbersome exercise, but it can be honed, improved by following the practical tips, he emphasized. Labeling the listening skills as one of the premier modes of learning, he asked them to continuously work on improving their listening skills.

Dr. Saroj Arora, Deptt. of Botanical & Environmental Sciences and the Coordinator of the Course briefed the participants about the thrust area of the course. Linking the  spread of different types of fatal diseases with the prevalent dietary habits of the people, she said that the thrust area of the course has been chosen to enlighten them about the dire need to change our dietary habits and to disseminate the message further.

Prof. (Mrs.) Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre traced the history of setting up these centres by the University Grants Commission these & said that these centres had rendered yeoman's services in updating the knowledge, expertise and honing the pedagogical skills of the teachers of higher education & are  continuing  doing so till date. She exhorted the participants to make optimum use of such courses in order to equip themselves to grapple the challenges posed in the current times. Earlier Prof. Rao was accorded a floral welcome by Prof. (Mrs.) Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Dr. Saroj Arora  and Dr. Mohan Kumar. In the end, Dr. Satwinderjeet Kaur, Head, Deptt. of Botanical & Environmental Sciences proposed the vote of thanks. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
