Teej mela celebrated at Ferozepur

Ferozepur , August 19, 2014: In an attempt to engage the youth with the rich heritage and culture of Punjab, local Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev Memorial Society, Ferozepur, in coordination with district administration, organised a cultural festival “Mela Tiyan Da”. Prominent folk artist, educationists, students and residents of Ferozepur  participated in the programme.
Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, President of the society said that with the span of time, the youth of this culturally rich state is dispelling from its heritage. The society has made an attempt to work as a bond between the youth and the culture of Punjab.
The festival of “Teej” is famous for its songs, swings and sweet dishes. In past, the newly married Punjabi girls, used to come to their in-laws during the month of “savan”. They used to sing songs along with their friends while swinging hammock, waiting for their loved one.
The same mesmerising moments were witness here at the Mela. Famous Punjabi folk singer Sarabjit Mangat enthralled the audience with her mesmerising voice while Sukhdeep Garewal, another talented Punjabi folk singer gave her good company.  Students from various colleges took part in different competitions portraying Punjabi culture like Mehandi, Crochet, Jaago.
The society also honoured Dr.Madhu Prashar, an eminent educationist and Principal of local Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepur City for her appraisable work in the field of education. Kamal Sharma, President, Punjab BJP and DPS Kharbanda, Deputy Commissioner, Ferozepur took part in the function as Special Guests.
Participants were honoured with various titles like “Melan Mele Di”, “Gidhiyan di Rani”, “Tiyan di Rani”, “Suchji Punjaban” during the function.
