Ludhiana, November 4, 2015: The Punjab Government is taking a serious note of the damage to the crop due to the vagaries of weather and attack of various diseases. A team of experts comprising Mr Suresh Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Development), Punjab; Dr G.S. Kalkat, Chairman, Punjab State Farmers’ Commission; and Dr B.S. Sidhu, Agriculture Commissioner, Punjab visited the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today to discuss the new methodology for assessing the crop damage. They interacted with Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU; Dr Brijendra Pateriya, Director, Punjab Remote Sensing Centre (PRSC); and faculty of the University. Dr Dhillon accorded a warm welcome to the experts.

During the interaction, a group “Techbazz Innovation” gave a presentation on “Using UAVs for Crop Damage Assessment.” Suggesting ‘remote sensing’ for damage assessment, the experts of the group specifically referred to drone methodology as it is high resolution imagery, has no cloud cover issues, faster deployment and its cost is lower than other methods.

Appreciating the technology for damage assessment, Mr Suresh Kumar suggested PAU and PRSC to jointly work out the usability of the technology. He said, “We are looking for technology based assessment of crop damage.”
