Chandigarh, June 2, 2019: Kunal Jain, Deputy Secretary, Indian Chemical Council - Northern Region, has stated that Indian plastic industry is making significant contribution to many sectors, including agriculture, horticulture, healthcare, packaging industry to name a few. While the usage and benefits of plastics are manifold, it invariably gets branded as a polluting material, despite the contribution of the sector in improving the quality of life. The sector has a huge perception issue as well. The facts or myths regarding the polluting characteristic of plastics need to be addressed in a scientific manner. He added as a matter of fact, the industry in the coming decades has to promote sustainable development by investing in technologies that protects environment and stimulates growth while balancing economic needs and financial constraints. Industrial wastes have to be managed better. New technologies are available for tackling the problem of industrial waste. It also needs to be noted that alternates to plastics may actually cause more environmental damage in the long run. Awareness about actual facts needs to be created with a positive attitude, he said. Further, he said to address the above issues which are important for the sustainable growth of the sector, Indian Chemical Council (ICC is an apex body representing Indian Chemicals & Petrochemicals industry since 1938) is organizing a Seminar on “Sustainability of Polymer (Plastic) Industry with Focus to Perception Management, Plasticulture and Packaging” in Chandigarh on 4th June 2019.
