Punjab News/Bhai Veer Singh taught lesson of women empowerment through his novel ‘Sundri’- Dr.Malhi

Talwandi Sabo, December 5, 2013: Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo organised special function on the 141st Birth anniversary of Bhai Veer Singh the prominent litterateur of twentieth century and supreme litterateur of mother-tongue, Punjabi.
In his presidential address, Dr. N.S Malhi, Vice Chancellor stated that like other poets & writers, Bhai Veer Singh was a lover of nature and he used to extract ideas for his writings from the hills & valleys. He has a special attachment with Kashmir which is source of his poem ‘Matak Hulare’. The famous novel ‘Sundri’ is his first novel which is a wonderful document of women empowerment. The best way of memorising this apostle of nature is to grow flowers & to nurture them.
Sukhraj Singh Sidhu, Managing Director of the University declared that from next year on 5th December ‘Guldaodi Show’ will be held every year in future in which educational institution, Govt. institutions, Nursery owners of Malwa region will participate. He also hailed the initiative taken by Punjabi Department of the University in organising this function.
In his keynote address, Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill, Director (Planning & Development) Guru Kashi University stated that in order to decorate the shape of Punjabi poetry, Bhai Veer Singh, Prof. Puran Singh, Dhani Ram Chatric and many other poets have contributed significantly but it was Bhai Veer Singh who, through his poems, brought out the Punjabi poetry from orthodox phase to modern lines which has been possible through his new methodology and shape. Truly speaking, Bhai Veer Singh is well known as great poet of short poems. Dwelling upon the writings of Bhai Veer Singh, Prof Gill stated that Sahitya Academy Award Winner, Padam Shri Bhai Veer Singh was not only a great poet but also a novelist critic and debater. Among his superb writings which proved to be a root the modern Punjabi literature were ‘Sundri’, ‘Bije-Singh’, ‘Satwant Kaur’, ‘Baba Naudh Singh’, ‘Raja Lakhdata Singh’ which are extremely popular.  Dr. Sunil Kumar, Department of Punjabi of the University also presented paper regarding life and achievement of Bhai Veer Singh
